New Year

I am grateful for the near arrival of the new year and the sense of fresh beginnings that comes with it.  I realize that the new year is a contrived thing.  It is, after all, just the tick of a clock.   Still, I find myself thinking of new goals and new possibilities for the new year.  It is, I believe, a profound spiritual truth that we do not have to continue to be what we have been, to do what we have been doing, or to think as we have been thinking.  There is the possibility of newness and fresh creativity in this present moment!

I have never been one to make New Year's resolutions. In the past, it seemed like something "trendy" to do rather than a serious promise to be kept. Within 30 days or less those trendy resolutions were often forgotten and given up.

Recently I came across these words of wisdom in my "Daily Book of Positive Quotations":

*January 1*
"One resolution I have made, and try always to keep, is this: To rise above the little things."
~ John Burroughs

Now that I am older, like Burroughs, I choose "to rise above the little things" which can add up all too quickly to become one HUGE unbearable mess. I choose to respond with love instead of reacting with negativity! Lord willing, I can continue in this endeavor for the remainder of my days. After all, I am but a work in progress! :)
